Question:

What made you join Greater Manchester Police?

Answer:

I joined GMP because I wanted a career where I would be meeting different people every day and would be faced with challenging situations. I had been working in a family business for a number of years and felt that doing the same tasks, day in day out, was becoming monotonous. I looked for a career that would present me with new and different opportunities, as well as a career structure to support my development.

Question:

How has GMP helped and support you in your day-to-day work?

Answer:

GMP has supported me in numerous ways. I have received training to equip me with the necessary skills to be a Police Officer and whenever I have been unsure about something, there has always been a supportive colleague to offer the right advice.

Question:

What do your family and friends think of your job?

Answer:

When I joined GMP, my family were very pleased for me. Although they were slightly apprehensive about the type of incidents I would have to deal with. I have never been seriously injured and my family are more relaxed about my role. I can certainly say that they are all extremely proud of me. As for my friends, I hear a lot of stories about people saying that your friends treat you differently when you join the police. This may be the case for some people but not for me. They see me more as a friend whom they can go to for advice and they value the professional contribution that I can make.

Question:

What is your most memorable experience?

Answer:

I have experienced so many different types of incidents that they are difficult to distinguish from. An operational incident last year springs to mind, which occured on a bitterly cold New Year's Eve. I worked with a number of colleagues in rescuing a woman from a motorway bridge, who was threatening to jump. The fact that no one was injured was a credit to the professional way in which GMP officers are trained, combined with the skills developed during our basic training to deal with such incidents.

Question:

What are your future aspirations?

Answer:

I have joined a career where, each day, I do not know what new challenge I am going to face. I have made many friends and developed skills which I would never have thought about if I had remained in my previous job. I am more than happy with my role at the moment. In the future, I will certainly be looking to experience working in some of the specialist departments around GMP. In the long term, further promotion is an aspiration.
